Privacy Policy

Prepped is a meal planner that runs on your iPhone and iPad. Your recipes, notes, plans and shopping lists stay on your devices and in your own iCloud. We never see them, and nothing in this app sends them anywhere else. This page explains exactly what does leave your device, and why.

What Prepped stores, and where

Everything you put into Prepped is stored on the device itself. It is also mirrored to the private part of your iCloud account, under your own Apple ID, so it follows you to a new phone and to your iPad. That mirror is Apple's service, protected by your Apple ID, and it is the same for everyone: free or Pro. We have no server that holds your library, and no way to read it.

If you delete Prepped, the copy on that device goes with it. The iCloud copy stays until you remove it: open Settings on your device, tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage, and delete Prepped's data.

What leaves your device

Fetching a recipe

When you save a recipe from a website, Prepped downloads that page and its photo directly from the site, the way a browser would. The site sees a request from your device and your internet address, and its own privacy policy applies to that visit. We are not involved in the request and do not see it.

Anonymous usage data

To find out which parts of the app work and which don't, Prepped sends anonymous usage events to PostHog, an analytics service, on servers in the United States. You can turn this off at any time in Prepped's Settings under Privacy, and when it is off nothing is sent, including anything queued earlier.

These events carry a random identifier for the installation and nothing that identifies you: no name, no email address, no Apple ID, no location, no contacts, no advertising identifier. There are no accounts in Prepped, so there is nothing to tie the events to a person. Automatic screen capture and session recording, which this kind of service can do, are switched off in the code.

Almost everything recorded is the shape of what happened, never the content: which screen was opened, that an import succeeded or failed and by which method, how many recipes a migration brought in, how many items a shopping trip had, which screen the Pro screen opened from, how long a timer ran, that an error occurred and in which part of the app.

There are six deliberate exceptions, each a small piece of functional text that lets a gap in the app be fixed without guessing. They are the whole list:

  • An ingredient line Prepped could not read. The line text, such as "2 heaped tbsp of the good stuff", so the parser can be taught it.
  • The name of an ingredient our grocery table does not know. The normalised item name only, such as "gochujang", so it can be added to an aisle.
  • The name of an ingredient the table knows but could not size into a package, and the reason.
  • The name of an item you moved to a different aisle, with the aisle it came from and the one it went to. Every name in these three is one of the fixed values shipped inside the app.
  • The web address of a recipe page when an import failed or needed review, so a site the app cannot read can be reproduced and fixed. Addresses of successful imports are not sent.
  • The web address of a recipe photo that failed to download.

If you choose to report something the app got wrong, from the row where it went wrong, the report sheet lists exactly what it will send and sends it only when you tap Send. A note you write never travels as usage data: a report with a note, or any report while usage data is off, goes by email instead, from your own mail app, to a person.

None of these carries a recipe title, a quantity in context, a note, a plan, a date, or any other ingredient from the same recipe. Prepped never sends recipe titles, the ingredients it did read, your notes, what you planned, or what you cooked. A year of someone's dinners says a lot about a household, and we have designed the app so that we cannot know it.

Subscriptions

Prepped Pro is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment and never shares your card details with us. To know whether a subscription is active, Prepped uses RevenueCat, a subscription service, which receives the purchase receipt from Apple and a random identifier for the installation. RevenueCat does not receive your name, email address or anything from your library.

Apple

Apple provides iCloud, the App Store and, if you have chosen to share them with developers in your device settings, crash reports and diagnostics for the app. Apple's privacy policy governs those. Prepped may occasionally ask whether you would like to rate it, using Apple's standard prompt; what you answer goes to Apple, not to us.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, they are created and scheduled on your device. Nothing about them is sent to us or to anyone else.

Searching the web

If you search your library and nothing matches, Prepped offers to search the web for the recipe. Tapping that opens a Google search in your browser; from that moment Google's privacy policy applies.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell or share your data with anyone, for any purpose.
  • There are no advertisements and no advertising trackers.
  • We do not build a profile of you.
  • We do not use your recipes, notes or plans to train any model, and Prepped never generates recipes.
  • There are no accounts. We do not ask for your name or email address, and we do not have them unless you write to us.

Your choices

  • Turn off usage data in Prepped's Settings, under Privacy.
  • Export everything from Settings, at any time, free, whether or not you subscribe.
  • Delete everything by deleting the app and removing Prepped's data from iCloud, as described above.

Because usage events are anonymous and carry no identifier that connects them to you, we cannot find and delete the events from a particular person. That is by design: there is nothing to request because there is nothing that identifies you.

Children

Prepped is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and anything that matters is called out in the app's release notes. We will never quietly widen what leaves your device: a new exception to the list above would be added here before the app started sending it.
